The Piano Teacher

Watched this primarily because it was mentioned in Sentimental Value. After reading the Wikipedia page, I was incredibly fascinated by how this might connect to Foucauldian thinking about the repressive hypothesis, as well as how Victorian sexual discourse could have generated an obsessive and warped understanding of sexuality in order to preserve and postulate power structures.

Just an incredible character study. Erika is such a fascinating depiction of the same ideas that Kazuo Ishiguro also explores in The Remains of the Day regarding Stevens. Both main characters build their identities around duty, discipline, control, restraint, and repression, only to realize that it has left them hollow.
