I feel like many of the major releases this year have assumed that the audience is stupid
Interesting to think about alongside the Satanic panic of the 80s/90s and David Lynch’s strain of suburban paranoia
This India ancient evil spirit stuff getting dropped out of nowhere is an interesting decision

Wasn’t really my cup of tea. I felt like the writing was split and frayed in a few too many directions (*1).
I think part of the point was to have the crew mimic the nuclear family. But it seems to me like in order to do so, it requires some depth and investment in developing each of the three main characters. But it felt like each character was just a bit too single faceted and flat by the end. I also might have a high bar though for what constitutes “good writing” though. There is a good movie that exists inside the promise that the premises set up, but the execution feels off.
I think a great example of what would have been ideal character development here is something closer to what Paul Thomas Anderson did in Boogie Nights.
